Dr Chee Soon Juan’s article “Change and America’s new president” on the SDP website drew some asinine comments, which isn’t uncommon.

Stuff like:

Obama and Chee. Both are Democrats.

The difference : 1 is due to take presidential office soon while the other 1 is due to enter prison, also soon.

Not all Democrats are the same.

Here is my response, which I also left on the SDP website:

Political change is coming. And it’s not just about Dr Chee or the SDP.

They can throw the man in jail, over and over again. They can forbid him from speaking. They can bankrupt him. They can twist malleable minds to convince the masses that he is the devil incarnate.

But this is more than “Chee vs Lee”, or PAP vs SDP and {insert random political party here}.

This is about us, as Singaporeans, what we believe in, and what we are willing to fight for.

So those cheering the jailing of Dr Chee, please stop being dumbasses. Take your heads out of your asses, and start thinking.

It’s not about the imprisonment of one man; it’s about the rape of a nation.

Why are you cheering your own repression?

SDP head Dr Chee Soon Juan was fired from his position as a psychology lecturer at the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 1993, over alleged misappropriation of research funds, just months after he joined the opposition party.

But the recent suspension of John Tan comes as a surprise. After all, JCU is an Australian-based institution, and supposedly enjoys autonomy from the Singapore state.

According to the SDP, Tan’s abrupt suspension followed an email complaint by a “Collin Lim”, copied to the Minister of Education, Dr Ng Eng Hen. The contents of that email was not revealed.

The SDP claims that “the University acted out of fear of the Singapore Government and suspended Mr John Tan for reasons other than academic considerations”.
